Pacman-Destroys De la Hoya

Williams breaks down Phillips

Paul the Punisher Williams put on an impressive performance by dominating and stopping former 154 pound champion Verno Phillips. Williams had to endure a nasty cut cause by a clash of heads and was able to outwork and punish to the body the game but outgunned Phillips. Verno tried his best to stay in the fight but he just didn’t have the punching power to hurt or make Williams respect him. The fight was competitive for the first 3 rounds from then on the Georgia native dominated the action and beat up on Phillips. It got to the point were you started to fill concerned for Verno’s health. The fight was stopped during the break between rounds 8 and 9. This was Williams third straight fight in a different weight class and he has looked impressive on each of them scoring 3 ko’s. I would like to see Williams fight the winner of Cotto-Margarito if both fighters win their next scheduled fights. Also Andre Berto would make a nice opponent but I know Lou Dibella will not take this fight. What about Pavlick at 160?

Pacman-Destroys De la Hoya

manny-pacquiao-and-oscar

Wow I definitely didn’t see this one coming. I was not the only one that though de la Hoya was just too big for Paquiao and that he would impose his physical strength to either stop the Pacman or win a decision. Well I got a good helping of crow for breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Paquiao didn’t only beat De la Hoya he dominated him by winning every round, beat him up and forced him to quit on his stool. The Golden boy look like he was in slow motion and Paquiao’s speed made the fight become a total mismatch. This was by far the worst beating in De la Hoya’s hall of fame career. Paquiao in my book is turning the corner in becoming a modern all time great and that is a word can’t be thrown around too often this days. His wins over Barrera (twice), Morales (twice), Marquez and now De la Hoya make his resume quite impressive. The golden promoter at 35 just can’t compete on the elite level any more and has to seriously consider retirement at this point. His only options should be a farewell fight against someone safe he can beat (and that is not a given) or one of his 90’s peers like Quartey, Tito, Forrest. The former group would definitely make for a bigger event and much better pay. For Paquiao the world is hiss as he can pick and choose the fight he wants. The biggest event would be against Mayweather if he returns (I like many in that one). Also a third fight with Marquez would be awesome. The fight I think will happen in 2009 is against Ricky Hatton and I like many to win that one also.

Klitschko stops overmatch Rahman

Wladimir Klitschko easily beat Hasim Rahman with a 7 round tko. Klitschko dominated with a stiff jab and nice right hands through the fight. Rahman never landed any significant punch and looked exhausted early in the fight. This was a boring fight with not many action and as one-sided as a boring fight can get. Wladimir dropped Rahman in the sixth round but he managed to survive the round. In the seventh Klitschko punished a defenseless Rahman until referee Tony Weeks stopped the fight. Why Rahman keeps getting these chances? At this point he is just a name fighter looking for a pay check with nothing much to offer. He might win fights on the journey man circuit but he can’t compete with a top 10 fighter any more. Klitschko might be the most talented heavyweight out there but for some reason more than often he doesn’t deliver in the excitement department. Some of his fights drag for farr too long for my taste going rounds with guys he should blow away within 4. I would like to see little brother fight either Haye, Valuev or Povetkin next. All are winnable fights but you never know with Wlady’s suspect performances in the past.

Caballero Molitor

Caballero Molitor

Caballero outclasses Molitor

In a fight that was thought to be very competitive, Celestino Caballero blew out Steve Molitor in front of the Canadian’s home crowd. The key for the Panamanian was the constant pressure he put on Molitor, who looked uncomfortable and was never able to use his good boxing skills. Caballero dropped Molitor in the 4th round with a right hand and then finished him off with an array of punches that Molitor couldn’t defend prompting the referee to stop the fight at the same moment as his corner threw in the towel. With the win Caballero unifies the IBF/WBA Super Bantamweight Title makes himself a serious thread to Marquez, Vazquez or Lopez. With his unorthodox style, size and reach Caballero has a real good chance of winning any of those fights. Let’s start banging the drums for Caballero-Lopez which I guarantee will not end in the first round.

Hatton Dominates Malignaggi

Ricky Hatton showed he is still the best 140 pounder in the world by totally dominating the game but outgunned Malinaggi. The fight was not exciting by any means because of the constant clinching by both fighters but Hatton was able to outwork and put constant pressure on the Brooklyn native. Hatton hurt Malignaggi badly with a right hand in the second round. Pauly was never able to box at a distance to effectively use his boxing skills. Hatton was able to quickly close the distance and dominate the inside fight. With only 5 ko’s Malignaggi didn’t have the punching power to earn Hatton’s respect. During the 11th round Malignaggi’s trainer Buddy Mcguirt stopped the fight. It was a weird stoppage because Paulie didn’t look to be that hurt. Malignaggi was furious as he stated in the post fight interview by saying that he was more hurt during the Cotto fight and the fight was not stopped. Hatton’s only meaningful fight at 140 would be with the winner of Holt-Torres rubber match (If it is re-scheduled) of against Tim Bradley. But the fight I see happening in 2009 is against Manny Paquiao and I like the Pac man big time if that fight happens.

Arreola outslugs Walker

In a very exciting fight Chris Arreola 26-0 23 knocked out Travis Walker 28-2 22 in the 3rd round to keep his undefeated record and status as Americas best heavyweight. Walker started the fight very strong being busy and constantly beating the pudgy Arreola to the punch. In the second round Walker dropped Arreola to his knees with a hard right hand. It looked like Walker was on his way to an upset but Arreola recovered and returned the favor with interest by knocking Walker twice in the same second round. At the start of the third round Arreola hurt Walker with a right hand then finished him with a nice left hook at 0:13 of round 3. Arreola has the potential to be a star but he needs to start acting more like a professional regarding his training or lack of it. His ideal weigh should be around 230-235 which is what he weighed against Damian Wills. Against Walker h he weighed 254 and was 258 if the previous fight. This lack of discipline almost cost him dearly in the Walker fight lets hope he understands that he should be 100% ready for every fight. It says here that Arreola is no way near ready to face any of the Klitschko right now. He should keep busy so his weight can be monitored and keep increasing his level of opposition and maybe in 2010 he can challenge for the tittle.
